Free antivirus maker Avira debuts a laundry list of changes in its latest major update, basically repositioning the suite to remain competitive in the face of tougher competition from other free security suites and a renewed emphasis on performance from paid competitors. From the new breezy installation to the modernized interface and reputable security, the suite has a lot going for it.

However, it notably lacks some features that many people consider basics even at the free level, so this version may only wind up appealing to existing Avira users and fans.

Longtime Avira fans will note that the suites also have undergone a bit of a name change. The product title "AntiVir" has been dropped, as Avira AntiVir Personal becomes Avira Free Antivirus, Avira AntiVir Premium becomes Avira Antivirus Premium, and Avira Premium Security Suite becomes Avira Internet Security. While product-specific names may work for some companies because of legacy associations, such as the Norton product from Symantec, new user confusion has likely forced security suite makers to streamline their operations.

The suites have also skippped version 11, perhaps driven by a Spinal Tap-esque fear of exploding amps, and gone straight to version 12. It's also possible that the company was thinking of aligning the version number with the release year, as most security suites released in the fall have version numbers that reflect the coming year.

Installation
Getting into Avira has never been easier, as version 12 debuts a two-click install. The company says that it developed the two-click installation as part of its "less is more" strategy, where it offers the same level of protection as before without the hassle. Of course, that's a tacit acknowledgement of prior problems.

Avira 12 renews commitment to security

Anyway, the new install is the simplest of the major free security suites. The two-click process will auto-detect competing security components and remove them, so be warned if you think you're going to be more secure by running two overlapping AVs. Avira won't let you.

Another click will take you past the Ask.com toolbar and search engine re-direct, but at least Avira is polite: it's an opt-in, not opt-out, experience. The toolbar screen itself is a bit unclear: it's actually Avira's WebGuard feature, powered by an Ask.com search engine that's part of the toolbar. There's also an option to have Ask.com become your browser's default engine, although that's not checked by default.

At the end of the installation process, Avira will begin a quick scan. On our test machine, it took about 1 minute, 25 seconds to complete, a completely reasonable wait to endure before the suite is ready to go.

Interface
The new interface is simple and mimics that of many competitors. A left nav shows you your tools, while the center pane focuses on a deeper dive into your security. New on-off buttons make it easy to toggle features, although it's noteworthy that the free version is quite restricted when compared with the free competition.

A red banner with the program name serves as a wrapper to anchor the suite, with a Windows XP-style menu bar above it. It doesn't look bad in Windows 7, although it is definitely archaic. The only feature that you can't reach from any other part of the interface except the menu bar is the Help menu.

The main interface is the Status window, with a green check box letting you know when you're safe. It turns to yellow when there are security tasks to perform or when you've turned off a feature, like real-time protection. It turns red when there's something mission-critical that requires your attention.

Below that, you've got two categories: PC protection, and Internet protection. What this really means is that the former protects you from threats locally, while the latter guards you against new threats from attacking you. Under PC protection, you can toggle your real-time protection, manually run a scan, start an update, or upgrade to a paid version of Avira. Use the gear icon next to each option to open the configuration window, which has its own slider in its upper-left corner to quickly change between the standard view and expert mode.

One hint about the system scanner option from the left nav: this is where you would go to initiate specific types of scans, or scans on specific parts of your computer, such as a rootkit scan in C:/Windows. For a generic scan, use the Scan System option from the Status window.

Under Internet protection, you only get one option in Avira Free: Web protection. If you chose to not install the toolbar, then this entire section will appear grayed out.

It doesn't sound like much, but that's the point. This is the easiest-to-use version of Avira yet.

Features and support
This is one area where the changes Avira has made are not so apparent. Longtime users of Avira Free are not likely to recognize much new. The scanner checks for virus, Trojans, rootkits, and adware. There's a generic threat removal engine, but Avira--like many security suites--is much better at preventing threats from infecting you, rather than removing ones you've already got.

The advanced options menu doesn't contain much that's new, either, but the layout is new, and it's quite easy for a savvy person to drill deep into security settings and either extract the information they want or set a very customized level of security. This includes scanning as Administrator from the main interface, a window showing realtime scan performance, configuring how to scan of archives, and a restart reminder in case you enjoy that kind of automated nagging.

The engine powering the scans has been improved, too. Your Hosts file is protected by default, and resource usage has been slashed. And after the daily virus definition file update, Avira still takes over your screen with a pop-up asking you to upgrade.

The company told me that it kept it because its users like it. According to its market research feedback, the pop-up apparently reminds people that they've been protected. Be that as it may, I find it an unnecessary distraction that blocks me once a day from doing something more important than clicking away an ad.

If a problem is discovered, a one-click Fix problems button appears at the top of the Status window. Click it, and even if the fix is something as simple as reactivating a deactivated module, the program will do it for you.

The WebGuard feature, available only if you install the Avira toolbar, takes a more aggressive approach to detecting sites that could be hosting malware before they load on your computer. This is not unlike Avira's competitors. However, for the performance cost to the browser for a toolbar, search result ratings would be a nice compensation. Too bad they're not offered.

Features-wise, the free version provides the kind of security that most people will be comfortable with. For people who want more, Avira Antivirus Premium 12 ($29.99 for a one-year license) comes with a suspicious behavior guard for when programs or files that might be trusted act in an unsecure manner; the silent/gaming mode for fullscreen use; and live telephone support. Avira Internet Security 12 ($49.99 for a one-year license) rolls in parental controls; an e-mail spam guard; antiphishing measures; and a firewall that I found to be obnoxiously chatty and intrusive.

While the firewall and parental controls are always relegated to premium status, it seems quite niggardly of Avira to reserve the silent/gaming mode for premium users, when competitors don't and all the while insisting upon a pop-up that can interrupt any activity you're using your computer for.

Performance
Avira's performance in the past has been hit or miss, with strong detection rates but high false positives. Avira's been doing a lot of work in that area, though, and this is one of the best-performing versions of Avira that we've seen.

Avira Free Antivirus 12 shares the same detection engine as its premium upgrade siblings, Avira Antivirus Premium 12 and Avira Internet Security 12, so all three are discussed here.

In a real-world test, Avira completed its initial scan during installation in 1 minute, 25 seconds. However, the new Avira still does not whitelist known safe files on your system, so repeated scans will check out the same file, even if it's got a hash that indicates that it's been unchanged since the last scan. The Full scan averaged 1 hour, 36 minutes over three installs, which is an appropriate benchmark for such a resource-intensive scan.

CNET Labs' benchmarks found that Avira benchmarked well in most system tests, but with room for improvement in the critical test of boot-time impact. Note that while last year's benchmarks were tested on the basic installation of Windows 7 x64, CNET Labs is now using a Windows 7 x64 test bed running Service Pack 1. So while results are more comparable than they would be with, say, a Windows XP computer, there's still a notable difference between the test computers.

Avira Internet Security 12 performed had one of the smallest impacts on computer start up, slowing it down only by 13.1 seconds when the average was 25.3 seconds. However, Avira Free Antivirus and Avira Antivirus Premium slothed along and added nearly 60 seconds each, the two worst suites tested so far this year.

Virus..!!!! become increasingly more days .. man say Computer make world more better, Virus make world more beautiful.. It's saying the Computer make world more better, Virus make world more beautiful .. Wow.. But the words may be true also. Log in to the topic that is way we create a file that is missing due to virus ... Until now I have never found a virus delete files directly, and hopefully we never have: f But the virus is usually just hide it or just the most severe we file infections...!!! Then how do you create the files we are exposed to the virus ..??? There are many ways and it's all very easy ..!!! Following ways that we return the data as they are ..!!!

1. Help Using Antivirus
Currently, many local antivirus that have facilities to show hide a file of them, namely ..!!! Smadav and Ansav At the time smadav scanning hidden files that will go directly to the list hidden files / folders. Living click show all hidden files / folders then you are missing files will appear again. On Ansav we must go to the plugins menu and double click on the plugins hidden Revealer, and select the target start. Done ..!!!

Virus..!!!! Wah makin hari makin menjadi.. Ada pepatah bilang Computer make world more better, Virus make world more beautiful.. Wow.. Selogan yang Mengerikan..!!! Tapi mungkin kata-kata itu ada benarnya juga. Masuk ke topik kita yaitu Cara memunculkan file yang hilang akibat virus... Sampai saat ini saya belum pernah menemukan virus yang mendelete file-file kita langsung dan semoga tidak pernah ada :f Tetapi biasanya virus hanya menyembunyikannya saja atau paling parah yaitu menginfeksi file kita...!!! Lalu bagaimana cara agar memunculkan file-file kita yang terkena virus..??? Ada banyak cara dan semuanya sangat mudah..!!! Berikut cara-cara agar data kita kembali seperti semula..!!!

1. Menggunakan Bantuan Antivirus
Saat ini banyak antivirus local yang mempunyai fasilitas untuk show hide file diantaranya yaitu Smadav dan Ansav..!!! Pada smadav maka saat scan file yang tersembunyi akan langsung masuk pada list hidden file/folder. Tinggal click show all hidden file/folder maka file anda yang hilang akan muncul kembali. Pada Ansav kita harus masuk ke menu plugins dan double click pada plugins hidden Revealer, select target dan start..!!! Selesai..!!!

Buka my computer, pilih menu tools, klik folder options, pada menu hidden files and foldes pilih show hidden file and folders. Setelah file kita terlihat Klik kanan pada file kita yang beratribut hide lalu pilih properties, lalu hilangkan check pada hidden klik ok..!!!

4. Menggunakan Perintah DOS

Mungkin untuk yang tidak familiar dengan dos maka saya sarankan untuk copy dan pastekan saja scrip dos dibawah ini ke notepad dan save dengan nama yang berakhiran *.bat contoh showhide.bat

Cara Update Avira Antivir

Avira merupakan salah satu antivirus terbaik saat ini. Tetapi apabila databasenya tidak dilakukan update maka kinerja dari Avira itu sendiri tidak akan berjalan optimal. Biasanya Avira antivir akan meminta update setiap 3 hari..!!! Untuk user yang terhubung dengan internet tentunya akan mendapat kemudahan lebih dan praktis dibandingkan dengan user yang tidak terhubung dengan internet. Kemudahan yang didapat oleh user online yaitu dengan hanya menjalankan control panelnya ( double click shourcut atau double click pada stray icon ) lalu click start update pada menu overview maka update Avira langsung berjalan..!!! Dan apabila kita lupa untuk melakukan update maka akan muncul pemberitahuaan bahwa Update Avira antivir anda sudah lewat dari 3 hari dan harus segera melakukan update..!!! Click update apabila anda ingin melakukan update atau ok untuk mengabaikan pemberitahuan tersebut..!!!

Lalu bagaimana dengan User yang tidak terhubung dengan internet..???

Bagi user yang tidak terhubung dengan internet maka terdapat langkah-langkah yang perlu dilakukan. Berikut penjelasannya :

Untuk anda yang tidak memiliki jaringan internet maka anda harus pergi ke warnet atau tempat lain yang memiliki internet koneksi.
Download file updatenya ( ivdf_fusebundle_nt_en.zip ) pada situs resmi Avira yaitu dengan cara mengunjungi web berikut http://www.avira.com/en/support/vdf_update.html Lalu click Download IVDF (Unicode)
Setelah proses download selesai, save file hasil download tadi dan pastekan di compter anda.
Double click shoutcut avira lalu pilih menu update. Lalu click Manual update
Pilih file anda tadi ( ivdf_fusebundle_nt_en.zip ) lalu tekan open.
Tunggu beberapa saat maka Avira antivir anda sudah terupdate..!!!

Dan untuk antivirus-antivirus lain seperti AVG, Bit Defender, Ansav, dll juga mempunyai konsep update manual yang sama..!!! Tetapi Antivirus seperti Norton symantec, Nod32, dan McA Free memiliki sedikit perbedaan yaitu untuk melakuan update hanya perlu mendownload file updatenya dan mendouble click file tersebut maka update langsung berjalan..!!! Dan untuk anda yang memakai Antivirus Kaspersky sebaiknya lakukan update dengan manual update karena apabila lisensi Kaspersky anda tidak asli maka kaspersky anda akan terkena blacklist..!!!

Pada tahun 1949, John Von Neuman, mengungkapkan "teori self altering automata" yang merupakan hasil riset dari para ahli matematika.

1960, lab BELL (AT&T), para ahli di lab BELL (AT&T) mencoba-coba teori yang diungkapkan oleh john v neuman, mereka bermain-main dengan teori tersebut untuk suatu jenis permainan/game. Para ahli tersebut membuat program yang dapat memperbanyak dirinya dan dapat menghancurkan program buatan lawan. Program yang mampu bertahan dan menghancurkan semua program lain, maka akan dianggap sebagai pemenangnya. Permainan ini akhirnya menjadi permainan favorit ditiap-tiap lab komputer. semakin lama mereka pun sadar dan mulai mewaspadai permainan ini dikarenakan program yang diciptakan makin lama makin berbahaya, sehingga mereka melakukan pengawasan dan pengamanan yang ketat.

1980, program tersebut yang akhirnya dikenal dengan "virus" ini berhasil menyebar diluar lingkungan laboratorium, dan mulai beredar di dunia cyber.

Jenis-Jenis Virus

1. Virus Makro

Virus ini ditulis dengan bahasa pemrograman dari suatu aplikasi bukan dengan bahasa pemrograman dari suatu Operating System. Virus ini dapat berjalan apabila aplikasi pembentuknya dapat berjalan dengan baik, maksudnya jika pada komputer mac dapat menjalankan aplikasi word maka virus ini bekerja pada komputer bersistem operasi Mac.
Contoh virus:

Variant W97M, misal W97M.Panther panjang 1234 bytes, akan menginfeksi NORMAL.DOT dan menginfeksi dokumen apabila dibuka.

WM.Twno.A;TW :: 41984 bytes, akan menginfeksi Dokumen Ms.Word yang menggunakan bahasa makro, biasanya berekstensi *.DOT dan *.DOC

2. Virus Boot Sector

Virus Boot sector ini sudah umum sekali menyebar (terus terang hardiskku sering diformat gara gara virus ini Virus ini dalam menggandakan dirinya akan memindahkan atau menggantikan boot sector asli dengan program booting virus. Sehingga saat terjadi booting maka virus akan di load kememori dan selanjutnya virus akan mempunyai kemampuan mengendalikan hardware standar(ex::monitor, printer dsb) dan dari memori ini pula virus akan menyebar keseluruh drive yang ada dan terhubung kekomputer (ex: floopy, drive lain selain c:)
Contoh virus:

Varian virus wyx (langganan gwa nih :) ex: wyx.C(B) menginfeksi boot record dan floopy ;panjang :520 bytes; karakteristik: memory resident dan terenkripsi)

Varian V-sign : menginfeksi : Master boot record ; panjang 520 bytes; karakteristik: menetap di memori (memory resident),terenkripsi, dan polymorphic)

Stoned.june 4th/ bloody!:menginfeksi : Master boot record dan floopy; panjang 520 bytes; karakteristik: menetap di memori (memory resident), terenkripsi dan menampilkan pesan "Bloody!june 4th 1989" stelah komputer melakukan booting sebanyak 128 kali)

3. Stealth Virus

Virus ini akan menguasai tabel tabel interupt pada DOS yang sering kita kenal dengan "Interrupt interceptor". virus ini berkemampuan untuk mengendaikan instruksi instruksi level DOS dan biasanya mereka tersembunyi sesuai namanya baik secara penuh ataupun ukurannya.
Contoh virus:

Yankee.XPEH.4928, menginfeksi file *.COM dan *.EXE ; panjang 4298 bytes; karakteristik: menetap di memori, ukuran tersembunyi, memiliki pemicu

WXYC (yang termasuk kategori boot record pun karena masuk kategri stealth dimasukkan pula disini), menginfeksi floopy dan motherboot record; panjang 520 bytes;menetap di memori; ukuran dan virus tersembunyi.

Vmem(s): menginfeksi file file *.EXE, *.SYS, dan *.COM ;panjang fie 3275 bytes; karakteristik:menetap di memori, ukuran tersembunyi, di enkripsi.

4. Polymorphic Virus

Virus ini Dirancang buat mengecoh program antivirus,artinya virus ini selalu berusah agar tidak dikenali oleh antivirus dengan cara selalu merubah rubah strukturnya setiap kali selesai menginfeksi file/program lain.
Contoh virus:

Necropolis A/B, menginfeksi file *.EXE dan *.COM; panjang file 1963 bytes; karakteristik: menetap di memori, ukuran dan virus tesembunyi,terenkripsi dan dapat berubah ubah struktur

Nightfall, menginfeksi file *.EXE; panjang file 4554 bytes; karakteristik: menetap di memori, ukuran dan virus tesembunyi,memiliki pemicu, terenkripsi dan dapat berubah ubah struktur

5. Virus File/Program

Virus ini menginfeksi file file yang dapat dieksekusi langsung dari sistem operasi, baik itu file application (*.EXE),maupun *.COM biasanya juga hasil infeksi dari virus ini dapat diketahui dengan berubahnya ukuran file yang diserangnya.

6. Multi Partition Virus

Virus ini merupakan gabungan dari Virus Boot sector dan Virus file: artinya pekerjaan yang dilakukan berakibat dua, yaitu dia dapat menginfeksi file file *.EXE dan juga menginfeksi Boot Sector.

:::Syarat-Syarat Virus:::

Suatu virus dapat dikatakan adalah benar benar virus apabila minimal memiliki 5 kriteria (kriteria ini aku dapatkan dari sebuah sumber terpercaya :))
1.Kemampuan suatu virus untuk mendapatkan informasi
2.Kemampuannya untuk memeriksa suatu program
3.Kemampuannya untuk menggandakan diri dan menularkan
4.Kemampuannya melakukan manipulasi
5.Kemampuannya untuk menyembunyikan diri.
Kemampuan untuk mendapatkan informasi
Pada umumnya suatu virus memerlukan daftar nama nama file yang ada dalam suatu directory, untuk apa? agar dia dapat mengenali program program apa saja yang akan dia tulari, semisal virus makro yang akan menginfeksi semua file berekstensi *.doc setelah virus itu menemukannya, disinilah kemampuan mengumpulkan informasi itu deperlukan agar virus dapat membuat daftar/dat semua file terus memilah dengan mencari file file yang bisa ditulari. Biasanya data ini tercipta saat program yang tertular atau terinfeksi atau bahkan program virus ini dieksekusi. Sang virus akan segera melakukan pengumpulan data dan menaruhnya di RAM (biasanya :P ), sehingga apabila komputer dimatikan semua data hilang tetapi akan tercipta setiap program bervirus dijalankan biasanya dibuat hidden oleh virus (agar gak keliatan).

Kemampuan memeriksa suat program
Suatu virus juga sangat amat harus (berlebihan gak ya :P) bisa untuk memeriksa suatu program yang akan ditulari , misalnya ia bertugas menulari program berekstensi *.doc, dia harus memeriksa apakah file dokumen ini telah terinfeksi ataupun belum, karena jika sudah maka dia akan percuma menularinya 2 kali (virus aja perhitungan coba :)). Ini sangat berguna untuk meningkatkan kemampuan suatu virus dalam hal kecepatan menginfeksi suatu file/program. Yang umum dilakukan oleh virus adalah memiliki/memberi tanda pada file/program yang telah terinfeksi sehingga mudah untuk dikenali oleh virus tersebut.Contoh penandaan adalah misalnya memberikan suatu byte yang unik disetiap file yang telah terinfeksi.

Kemampuan untuk menggandakan diri
Kalo ini emang virus banget, maksudnya tanpa ini tak adalah virus. Inti dari virus adalah kemampuan mengandakan diri dengan cara menulari program lainnya.Suatu virus apabila telah menemukan calon korbannya (baik file atau program) maka ia akan menegenalinya dengan memeriksanya, jika belum terinfeksi maka sang virus akan memulai aksinya untuk menulari dengan cara menuliskan byte pengenal pada program/file tersebut, dan seterusnya mengcopikan/menulis kode objek virus diatas file/program yang diinfeksi. Beberapa cara umum yang dilakukan oleh virus untuk menulari/menggandakan dirinya adalah:

File/Program yanga akan ditulari dihapus atau diubah namanya.kemudian diciptakan suatu file menggunakan nama itu dengan menggunakan virus tersebut (maksudnya virus mengganti namanya dengan nama file yang dihapus)

Program virus yang sudah di eksekusi/load ke memori akan langsung menulari file file lain dengancara menumpangi seluruh file/program yang ada.

Kemampuan mengadakan manipulasi
Rutin (routine) yang dimilikisuatu virus akan dijalankan setelah virus menulari suatu file/program. isi dari suatu rutin ini dapat beragam mulai dari yang teringan sampai pengrusakan. rutin ini umumnya digunain buat memanipulasi program ataupun mempopulerkan pembuatnya! Rutin ini memanfaatkan kemampuan dari suatu sistem operasi (Operating System) , sehingga memiliki kemampuan yang sama dengan yang dimiliki sistem operasi.
misal:
•Membuat gambar atau pesan pada monitor
•Mengganti/mengubah ubah label dari tiap file, direktori, atau label dari drive di komputer
•Memanipulasi program/file yang ditulari
•Merusak program/file
•Mengacaukan kerja printer , dsb

Kemampuan Menyembunyikan diri
Kemampuan Menyembunyikna diri ini harus dimiliki oleh suatu virus agar semua pekerjaan baik dari awal sampai berhasilnya penularan dapat terlaksana. Langkah langkah yang biasa dilakukan adalah:

Program asli/virus disimpan dalam bentuk kode mesin dan digabung dengan program lain yang dianggap berguna oleh pemakai.

Program virus diletakkan pada Boot Record atau track yang jarang diperhatikan oleh komputer itu sendiri

Program virus dibuat sependek mungkin, dan hasil file yang diinfeksi tidak berubah ukurannya

Virus tidak mengubah keterangan waktu suatu file
